Last week I went to my very first major league sporting event. By volunteering to take surveys in the crowd before the game, I got free entrance to a Red Sox game at Fenway Park. The tickets were for standing room only, but I got to watch the game for free, so I still think it's a good deal.
I've never really cared about baseball before, but this was fun. Even though the Sox lost. The crowd had so much energy, better even than a USF homecoming football game. These people love their team, and it shows.
Here are a few action shots from the game. I'm not much of a sports photographer, but some of them turned out pretty well. First is Justin Masterson pitching. He's my default favorite player on the basis of my actually knowing who he was before the start of the season because he spoke at Park Street Church back in February.
I don't actually remember who this is batting, I just like how the photo turned out.
And lastly, the big man Ortiz at bat, hitting a foul ball. Even he couldn't pull us out for a win.
And now, I think I am a member of the Red Sox Nation. It was probably inevitable, with me living only a few blocks from the stadium. At the game I ate ice cream out of a plastic Red Sox hat, and a few days later went to Build A Bear Workshop with my parents and got a bear in the home team white uniform, who I named Justin because their online bear registration demanded that I name him immediately.
Everybody needs a team to root for and get excited about, and now I've found mine. That is, when I remember to pay attention to the sport at all.
