Tales of the Salad Bar: the saga continues

So I went in to work this morning and found the store in a state of chaos. Hy-Vee had actually been closed for a few hours during the night so they could do electrical work related to the remodeling. Apparently they blew the breaker around 4:00 am and the coolers all stopped working. So they covered all the refrigerated cases with plastic in an attempt to retain the coolness. The power didn’t come back on to those cases until 10:00. Now, during that time there also was no air conditioning, which would have been more of a problem if not for the huge gully-washer of a storm going on outside. It kept us nice and cool while we worked to get the salad bar ready. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the salad bar up on time because the kitchen had put some of their stuff in it until the power came back and their freezers worked again. Then, when the bar was finally ready for us, we realized that it wasn’t working properly and wouldn’t keep the food cold. So we had to put the food in the back cooler until it was working again. Also, while the power was off, the ice machine was, of course, not making ice. So we couldn’t set up the ice case out front. Which meant that our fridge in the back room was full of product. Which meant that there was very little for us to do for the morning. We finally had ice around noon, so we got the ice case up and could work on filling the fridge again. Then they finally got the bar working around 1:00. And before we even got it completely set up, people were crowding around us trying to get at the food. Now, I realize that it was late and they were hungry, but the dishes of food are not stable until we have them all in. It’s frustrating having customers trying to dish up the food before we’ve put it on the bar. But anyways, the bar was finally set up and then it was about time for me to go home. Which means that it is now about time to go set up the booth. My mom gets worried about our neighbors encroaching on our space, even though it’s never happened before.

Other random thoughts:

Yesterday we got food from Taco John’s. Looking through the drive-up window, I realized that I knew 3 out of the 4 employees I could see. One of them even took the time to throw the window open and talk to me while we waited for our food. And yes, Christa, Kody still works there. I think his mom does too, though that’s beside the point.

Also yesterday, we were at WalMart and I discovered about the coolest piece of furniture ever. It’s called a Euro futon. It looks to me to be about the ultimate piece of dorm furniture. The only problem is, it’s beige. I’ll have to see if I can find a picture to share.

I think that’s about it for now. Time to go set up the booth.

CORRECTION: The coolers had been covered since 9pm the night before. I know because they were just finishing the covering when I began my shift at 9:50pm.

They shut the power off after midnight (closing time), while we were stocking the aisles. It was so awesome! The generator was running lights and registers w/in a couple minutes, though. The TECH GUY DUDES were amazed that I was able to run my register right away (solely for hungry employees), because they assumed everything would be down. I guess I showed them...or not. Anyhow, because there were no consumers, I happily stocked the aisles until my final hour---when I began rushing to finish my work up front. Funny rush, but I managed somehow.
