And tonight I got to see quite a few of them at the Banquet. No, this isn't a fancy dinner, it's a place where the poor of Sioux Falls can come for a free meal. On Thursday nights USF helps in the children's room reading to the kids and giving them books. This was the first time I've gone that it actually worked out that way. The first time I went they were short on their usual staff (it's all volunteer groups), so I ended up handing out tickets at the door. The next time there just weren't any interested children. But this time there was quite a crowd of eager young faces. Of course, there were also rambunctious little boys who would rather break things, but Dennis and the guys were able to tame them.
I wish I could remember the names of all the kids I met, but they tended to mumble and I have a terrible memory for names. Anyway, the first book I read to a girl involved random animal sounds, so that was a fun time. She seemed to really enjoy it. I just love how excited she and the others got when we offered to read to or with them. I'm definitely going back next time.
So many books and little eager readers. The very thought of it moves me in my writer's heart. Shoot. That reminds me: I'm supposed to be working on David's story. Or my novel. Or even homework, should I become terribly ambitious. Yes, I think it's time that I quit this rambling and get something productive done.
